“There are so many creative people in this community that fall in the gaps and rely on us for health care,” says Hulett. Among those patients are numerous musicians, artists and comedians who will be providing the entertainment this week. In the past year, the Church Health Center says patients made 46,000 visits to its medical clinic, with its wellness center receiving 117,000 visits. With a $17 million budget, the CHC helps large numbers of Memphians. Marking its 27th year in operation, the center provides health care for uninsured working people and their families. Hulett adds that other areas of the city - including Binghamton’s Broad Avenue and Downtown’s South Main - may serve as future areas where Rock for Love can hold events.īeyond the benefit to the community in general, Rock for Love has been a boon - both financially and in terms of attention - to the Church Health Center. “We’re lucky to have so many great partners - Crosstown Arts, the Hi-Tone, the Levitt Shell - that have really made it possible to make Rock for Love what it is.” “And, of course, for us Crosstown obviously made sense as well,” says Hulett, noting that the Church Health Center’s operations will move to the Sears Crosstown building fully in 2016. But we wanted to go in there because we knew it could be the great entertainment and retail district it’s become. “For example, in year 6 we did a show in Overton Square when there was really nothing going on there. Rock for Love’s growth has occurred almost hand in hand with the revitalization of several Midtown neighborhoods such as Crosstown and Overton Square and local resources like the Levitt Shell at Overton Park. That was probably the extent of our ambitions back then.” “Our intention was just, ‘Hey, let’s throw a benefit rock show to raise some dollars for the (CHC) and engage the creative community,” says Reager “We knew musicians - myself included - who were being served by the center and wanted to give back. Hulett, communications manager for the Church Health Center and a member of indie-rock band Snowglobe Stockwell, the center’s communications director and a longtime local musician with Pezz and musician and rock writer Reager couldn’t have imagined the progress of the event when they first hatched the idea. Seven years later, it’s turned into a multinight, multivenue event that is a binding community force in Memphis music, arts and culture. Rock for Love began as a modest one-night affair held at the now-defunct Gibson Beale Street Showcase in 2007. When the curtain closes on the eighth annual edition of their charity event this weekend, Rock for Love will have raised more than $250,000 to date for the Church Health Center.
